Ford went to electronic control not only for engine/transmission cohesion, but also improved shift quality by removing the short-comings of mechanical control. The AODE/4R70W is a 4-speed, rear-drive automatic overdrive with electronic control, hence the AODE designation. The only inter-changeable components are geartrain related. Although these transmissions have a great deal in common, they are also very different, with limits in interchangeability. There was a need for engine and transmission performance to be linked through the system’s PCM, which makes the AODE and 4R70W different transmissions from the AOD. The driver’s side has the manual shift linkage. ![]() ![]() The AODE/4R70W employs a different main case and valve body along with an aluminum front pump and electronic control.
